Manual Rigging Series (“Rigging isn’t Scary”)
This is the 1st post in my series about learning Manual Rigging in Blender. Find all posts in order here: https://cgdive.com/blender-rigging-tutorials/
Recently, I asked the CGDive community to share their challenges when it comes to Rigging. Thanks for the excitement and valuable feedback. Keep it coming! I read every single one and take notes.
But why did I ask you to share your thoughts, in the first place? Today Iâm stoked to share more information about a big project I am working on 24/7!
Rigging Fundamentals Course (and beyond)
I am working on a free course about Rigging Fundamentals – tentative title âRigging isnât scaryâ ⌠and it is just the beginning of a much bigger journey!
âRigging isnât scaryâ will be split into 3 Levels: Beginner, Novice and Intermediate. It gradually covers everything you need to know to create solid, reliable rigs and stop being confused about rigging. Here is a sneak peak:
The course is carefully crafted to take you beyond the Rigging âValley of Confusionâ (a.k.a. “Valley of the Suck”) that most people find themselves in. Iâll tell you more about that in another email đ
And more importantly: it doesnât end there! Once youâve mastered the fundamentals, youâll be able to take on more complex projectsâand thatâs where the fun really begins.
So hereâs the plan:
Beginner > Novice > Intermediate >>> Advanced
After you complete âRigging isnât scaryâ, weâll be diving into advanced rigging topics, each focused on a specific skill that builds on what you learned.
Of course, if you are already comfortable with the Fundamentals, you can skip the Beginner/Novice/Intermediate courses… at your own risk đ .
Some of the advanced rigging topics I know you are interested in are:
- Loose Clothes, Skirts, etc.
- Shoulder pads
- Wings
- Advanced Face Rigging
- Snakes, Ropes, Tentacles
- High Heels (including flat/high heel switching)
- IK/FK Snapping
- Advanced IK setups (more than two bones)
- Squash & Stretch
- Non-Spherical Eyes
- Spikes attached to a body
- Specialized topics in-depth: Bendy bones, Drivers, etc.
- ALL THE WAY TO:
- Bone Dynamics
- Rag-Dolls Physics
- Cloth Simulation
- Muscle Simulation
- Python scripting for Rigging
- and more…
Each of these topics is complex and deserves special attention. I believe the best approach is to cover them separately in specialized courses.
Community Driven Curriculum
Hereâs the best part: Youâll get to decide what we cover next.
Once the fundamentals course is out, Iâll be running community polls to find out which advanced topic excites you the most. Itâs your chance to shape the curriculum and ensure that each new course delivers exactly what you need to keep leveling up your skills.
My goal is to build an entire library of rigging courses so that no matter where you are in your Blender journey, thereâs a resource waiting to help you grow.
I also envision a rigging community where we can meet like-minded people and help each other level up.
But I want us to do so based on solid foundations. That is what âRigging Isnât Scaryâ is all about!
Whatâs Next?
âRigging Isnât Scaryâ is on its way, and I canât wait for you to dive in! Be sure to stay connected for early-access, course previews, and more details on the upcoming community polls.
Letâs make rigging easy, powerful, and way more fun – together.
